Prysmian will develop two new subsea interconnections

(Finance) – Prysmian Group Yes is awarded two contracts worth approximately 250 million euros awarded by Red Eléctrica, the TSO of the Spanish electricity grid, for the development of two projects: a ‘submarine interconnection for the transmission of energy between the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera and another undersea interconnection between theSpanish hinterland and Ceuta (Spanish city on the North African coast).

A technological challenge in which Prysmian will provide its 360 ° “turnkey” approach for the design, supply, installation and testing of a dual circuit 66 kV three-pole submarine cable system for the transmission of high voltage alternating current (HVAC – High Voltage Alternating Current) equipped with EPR insulation and synthetic armor to connect Tenerife and La Gomera to a depth of almost 1,150 m, a record for a 66 kV three-core cable, as well as a 132 kV three-core submarine cable dual-circuit system for HVAC power transmission with insulation in XLPE and synthetic armor to connect the Spanish hinterland and Ceuta across the Strait of Gibraltar to a maximum depth of 900m. The two systems include 90 km of submarine section and approximately 11 km of land cables relating to the double connection between the Spanish hinterland and Ceuta.

The submarine cables will be produced in the factories of Nordenham (Germany) e Pikkala (Finland), two of the Group’s centers of technological and manufacturing excellence for this type of cable. The terrestrial cables will instead be made by the Group’s local plant in Vilanova (Spain). The operations at sea will be carried out with one of Prysmian’s cable-laying vessels (Giulio Verne). Testing of both cable systems is scheduled for 2025.

“This award confirms the mutual trust and lasting relationship between Red Eléctrica and Prysmian Group, as it is the latest in a series of projects jointly developed in Spain to improve the reliability of the national electricity grid. We are proud to support Spain in the achieve its 2030 Energy Transition goals through the supply of our state-of-the-art submarine and ground cable systems “said Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects BU of Prysmian Group.

Prysmian Group can boast a solid track record in the development of subsea interconnections in Spain: Spain-Morocco, Iberian Peninsula-Mallorca, Ibiza-Mallorca and Lanzarote-Fuerteventura.
