There medieval fortified town of Provins rises on its rocky spur in the heart of the former region of the powerful counts of Champagne. If the fortifications of the Upper Town constitute a remarkable ensemble of military architecture from the 13th century, Provins owes its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to the remains of its medieval city, which once hosted the great fairs of Champagne.
