Violent protests against Bashar al-Assad’s regime have taken place in southern Syria on Sunday.

Protesters expressing dissatisfaction with their living conditions and with Bashar al-Assad’s regime have clashed with security forces in al-Suwayda.

One young man has been killed in the uprising and seven others have been injured, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which monitors the situation in the war-torn country from Britain.

According to SOHR, a crowd stormed the city hall and took down a portrait of the country’s hardline leader, after which police opened fire to disperse them.

Protests have erupted in al-Suwayda several times before since the civil war stopped and the regime regained control of the area. The city and the province, which have the same name, are mainly populated by the minority Druze group.
