Protests continue in Bangladesh – judges resign at student demand | News in brief

Bangladesh’s interim government took office last week after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh Obaidul Hassan and five other Supreme Court justices resigned on Saturday amid fresh student protests.

The country’s provisional government began its work with a Nobel Prize by Muhammad Yunus at the helm last week after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had resigned from his post and fled the country. The members of the provisional government were chosen in joint negotiations between the leaders of the student movement, civil society members and the army.

On Saturday, fresh protests broke out in Bangladesh after Chief Justice Hassan convened the country’s top judges to discuss the interim government’s efforts to reform the judiciary. Protesters invaded the premises of the Supreme Court and demanded the resignation of the judges.

The students accuse the resigned judges of favoring the previous government and corruption.
