Protesters tried to storm the embassy compound in Baghdad

Hundreds of protesters tried to storm Baghdad’s Green Zone, where government buildings and embassies are located, early Saturday.
It happened after an alleged Koran burning outside the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen.

The protesters were pushed back by security forces, who prevented the mob from reaching the Danish embassy in the Iraqi capital. This is written by the news agency AP.

The new protest takes place two days after the Swedish embassy in Baghdad was stormed and set on fire.

Koran burning in Copenhagen

It was on Friday afternoon that two people burned a book outside the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Islamophobic group Danske Patrioter is behind the book burning, the police say DR but it is not confirmed that it was actually a Koran that was set on fire.

Condemn the event

But Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the incident as a Koran burning.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly and repeatedly condemns the incident of abuse of the Holy Koran and the Iraqi flag in front of the Iraqi embassy in Denmark,” reads the statement.

The ministry calls on the international community to “quickly” take a stand against actions that “violate social peace and coexistence in the world”.

Another protest is scheduled to take place in Baghdad later on Saturday.
