Protesters storm Sweden’s embassy in Baghdad

Now protesters have stormed Sweden’s embassy in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, reports AFP.

Several countries reacted strongly after Salwan Momika burned a Koran outside Stockholm’s mosque on Södermalm on Wednesday. Among other things, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has condemned the Koran burning during the day.

On Thursday, demonstrators in Iraq’s capital Baghdad entered the grounds of the Swedish embassy to protest against the events in the Swedish capital.

Images shared on social media show how angry people enter the area to show their displeasure at the Koran burning.

People have also set fire to pride flags.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “Staff in safety”

AFP reports that the protesters reportedly entered the building and remained there for about 15 minutes before exiting as security forces arrived on the scene.

TV4 Nyheterna has been in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who are informed of the situation.

“Our embassy staff are safe and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in constant contact with them,” states the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ press service.

The security police state that they are following the development of events closely.

– We continuously assess the threat to Sweden and Swedish interests abroad, says Adam Samara, press spokesperson at Säpo.

In connection with the storming, the Shia Muslim leader Moqtada al-Sadr has demanded that the country act against the Swedish embassy.

– He has called for the Swedish ambassador to become persona non grata, i.e. to be sent out of the embassy in Baghdad, says TV4 Nyhetern’s Middle East correspondent Terese Cristiansson.
