Innovation in skin protection and environmental protection with French Kiss, a sunscreen brand launched by Yann Delplace, sailor and entrepreneur. He wanted to create the best sun protection for the skin and the ocean. Its cream is suitable for all members of the family. For Yann Delplace it is important to contribute to the preservation of fragile ecosystems while protecting the skin from harmful UV rays.
The ideal way to protect yourself from the sun is to not expose yourself to the sun. When you want to go to the beach, you have to wear sunscreen because the cancer rate is exploding. In France, the region with the most cancers is Brittany. UV rays pass through clouds. there is Brittany and Australia, in relation to the ozone layer, we really have to protect ourselves. It’s a cap and sunscreen regularly.
Yann Delplace, navigator and creator of French Kiss
“It was quite daring at the time to call a boat French Kiss. 90% of people found it funny and remembered it. The goal was to communicate about a name that people remember. There had France, there was French Kiss. It ticked all the boxes.”
Born in the north of France, Yann Delplace has been a sailor and a high-level sailing enthusiast since childhood. Quite naturally, he became a sailor. Today settled in the south of France, near the Mediterranean to pursue his passion, because he loves sailing. His daily outings at sea gradually made him aware of the importance of skin protection and that of the environment. Yann Delplace created, in 2016, French Kiss, a sunscreen brand that respects the skin and the environment which owes its name to the famous America’s Cup sailboat.
“The advantage is that French Kiss is known, but as a boat. The disadvantage is that now, French Kiss is also a sunscreen. Those under 30 will recognize French Kiss as a sunscreen while those over 50 will know French Kiss compared to a boat and sunscreen It’s a name that stands out There are 2. 000 sunscreen manufacturers around the world. Some have qualities, others have faults. I know the product is good.”
“ Those who sail and boaters are the second most exposed people in the world to the sun after those who go mountaineering. The rate of reverberation on a glacier is even greater than on the oceans. If it’s good for people who go boating, long-distance boating, regattas where they are extremely exposed to the sun, if it’s validated, obviously it’s validated for the person who goes for only a few hours on a beach for swimming or sunbathing. We started in this niche in relation to the history of the boat which is absolutely fantastic and to first reach people who go boating and then expand to everyone. »
To create his French Kiss sunscreen, Yann Delplace toured Europe and visited numerous laboratories. “ I toured Europe for four years to find the sunscreen that best met my specifications and I found it five kilometers from my home in Nice. In this laboratory there were three creams, two creams with natural filters and one cream with a natural, organic mixture. With their first sunscreen test, natural filters killed 70 to 80% of stem cells. Their sunscreen which was a mixture only killed 30%. They realized that these are natural filters, largely which kill the corals. For what ? Because it’s natural. But it’s natural on land, not in water. Therefore, organisms such as sea anemones or corals cannot filter them. They are not used to these products.”
“ Sunscreens disrupt this environment. This kills the algae inside and causes the corals to turn white. We therefore need a chemical filter that is good for the skin because there are chemical filters that are not good and natural filters that are good for the oceans and chemical filters as well. They took the best of each or the least bad of each to release a sunscreen. »
Made in France, the composition of the sun cream French Kiss limits the effects on corals and the entire marine ecosystem as much as possible. Ecological, it is certified by several labels such as Skin Safety. In order to make it known to as many people as possible, Yann Delplace has appointed ambassadors. “ The first is Jean Luc Van Den Heede, VDH for those who know a little about sailing enthusiasts. She’s my first muse. My second muse are young girls who are world sailing champions and Olympic champions. I have twelve around me now. Jean-Pierre Dick who is from Nice should join me very soon. »
“ The goal is for the brand to be visible on all bodies of water, for listeners, French Kiss is the boat that represented France in 1987 for the America’s Cup in Australia. It was helmed by Marc Pajot. It is a French boat with a very French name which defended the colors of France in Australia and which reached the semi-finals, which achieved the most important result in 147 years of the America’s Cup. We took back the name French Kiss. The boat serves as a laboratory and tests in real conditions. And I’m looking for ambassadors, young people who are on all the waters, to rejuvenate the brand. One in six French people over 50 knows the boat, which is enormous. But I think there are almost zero French people under 30. The goal of these young muses is that when they sail on the water, they make the brand known to younger people.”
Yann Delplace wants to improve the container of his sunscreen. His new challenge, packaging. “ I realized that the packaging was not up to the standard of the cream, we are improving year after year. The goal of the game is to considerably reduce the plastic content, the energy to produce and the quantity of water to produce. So, I approached a laboratory which is right next to Sofia-Cosmétique, therefore three kilometers from Carros, near Nice. There is almost zero carbon footprint since there is no travel. »
“ The new packaging was released last May. It’s eight times less plastic, it’s 70% less water consumption, 80% less electricity. The revolution within the revolution is that its packaging system is a resumption of the pear system in pastry, when the tube is compressed, in the end, at the end of the tube’s life, less than 1% of the product remains. , while currently all tubes of sunscreen in the world and in this format leave between 23 and 24% of sunscreen. »
