Hundred-year-old freshwater pearl mussels are at risk of dying due to low water flow levels, reports P4 Blekinge.

The County Administrative Board in Blekinge now urges that you should not take water from the rivers that are the home of the pearl mussel.

The water flows in the county are approaching the low levels that were in 2018.

– It can be very critical but it all depends on whether it rains, says Andreas Holmberg who is a freshwater biologist at the County Administrative Board in Blekinge to P4 Blekinge.

During the last 100 years, the freshwater pearl mussel has decreased drastically in the Swedish watercourses and is therefore red-listed and protected. The decrease is believed to be due to industries and hydropower plants that have used river water, but also climate change, which contributes to drought.
