The circumscribed surgeon Paolo Macchiarini was convicted on June 16 this year of causing bodily harm, a felony in one of the three cases he was charged with. This after he operated on synthetic tracheae in humans.
He was thus sentenced to a suspended sentence, had he been convicted on all counts he would have risked five years in prison.
– We have judged that these interventions have not taken place in accordance with science and proven experience. On the other hand, we believe that two of the interventions have nevertheless been regarded as justifiable, but not the third, says Chief Counsel Björn Skånsberg to SVT when the verdict was handed down.
On Wednesday morning, the prosecutor’s office announces that the Solna District Court’s ruling will be appealed to the Court of Appeal. The decision was made by Chief Prosecutor Mikael Björk in consultation with Chief Prosecutor Jim Westerberg and Senior Prosecutor Karin Lundström-Kron.
– It seems clear to me that it has been a question of completely illegal human experiments and the punishment should be determined to a long prison sentence given the nature of the crime and high penalty value, says Chief Prosecutor Mikael Björk in a press release.
