Prosecutor Jack Smith wants to see trial against Trump January 2

Special prosecutor Jack Smith wants the trial of Donald Trump, regarding the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, to begin on January 2, 2024, reports Reuters and refers to legal documents filed on Thursday.

The news agency writes that the trial, if it begins on the proposed date, will take place just two weeks before the Republican primaries for the presidential election begin.

May take between four and six weeks

Jack Smith and the prosecution say they believe the trial will take between four and six weeks, according to the documents.

It was last Thursday that Donald Trump was formally accused of trying to overturn the election results. The former president had the indictment read out to him and pleaded not guilty to all counts.

– This is pure persecution of a political opponent, this should not be allowed to happen in the United States, he told reporters after his appearance in the courtroom.

He is charged with four counts.

“The purpose of the conspiracy was to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election by using deliberately false claims about election fraud,” the 45-page indictment says, according to TT.

In total, Trump is charged in three different criminal cases. It is about accounting violations, the handling of secret documents and for trying to reverse his election loss in 2020.
