A proposed apartment complex in Wallaceburg took another step forward on Feb. 14.
Chatham-Kent councilors approved a recommendation to sever a property on Base Line Road to create a new 2.1-hectare (5.4-acre) site.
However, the development will require further municipal approvals for zoning amendments and the site plan before it can proceed.
The first phase, proposed by a numbered company, would be a five-storey, 85-unit building at 7030 Base Line Rd. in the community’s south end.
The development, known as Royal Ridge Residences, would feature a mix of one- and two-bedroom units, as well as various amenities, including an on-site gym.

“I’m confident that the public will be informed along the way throughout this process, as they are with all of our planning applications and projects,” he said.
“In my view, it’s incredibly positive and it’s an exciting project for the community of Wallaceburg. Something our community has not seen for many, many years.”
The first of potentially three buildings could be completed within a year after planning requirements are met and construction begins.
Ryan Jacques, director of planning services, told council the area is “capable and suitable” for high-density residential development.
Hall called the unprecedented momentum and expects it will continue.
“I really believe this is the first domino to fall in terms of sustained and needed growth in the community of Wallaceburg,” he said.
