The government’s investigators want it to be easier to fell in the forest area near the mountains.

It appears that leaked documents that DN and the Altinget have seen.

Today, a permit is required to fell forests close to the mountains. But the forest investigator Göran Örlander is considering, according to the document, to make a proposal which means that the permit requirement is removed – instead, as with fellings in the rest of the country, a felling notification will suffice.

Another change that is being discussed is to shorten the time that the Norwegian Forestry Agency has to review a felling notification, from 6 weeks to 10 days.

The proposal is said to have attracted criticism in the investigation’s expert group, above all from representatives of environmental organizations and authorities.

However, it is not unexpected based on how the directives are formulated, according to forest researcher Johanna Johansson.

– The directives are very production-oriented and are based on the fact that forestry should not be restricted. The consequence will be that we will have a continued very high felling rate, she tells DN.

At the same time, the risk is that the proposals will run counter to the parliamentary Environmental Objectives Committee.

The forest investigation was added in February. The investigator does not want to comment on the proposal, but refers to the first interim report in December.
