Promising development! Lung diagnosis from blood test

Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Coşkun shared the successful results of the blood test developed by Dutch researcher Remco de Kock for the early diagnosis of lung cancer.

Stating that lung cancer, which is diagnosed by approximately 20 million people in the world every year, is one of the most important health problems in our country, Prof. Dr. Coşkun said, “This risk increases up to 30 times in smokers. Although great progress has been made in the field of treatment with both smart drugs and immunotherapy, we are losing many patients from this disease. For this reason, early diagnosis is one of the most important goals besides the fight against smoking.

“DETERMINED BY PCR METHOD”

Stating that he announced the successful results of the blood test developed by a researcher named Remco de Kock, Prof. Dr. Coşkun said, “According to this test, in the blood test taken in individuals with suspected lung cancer, markers for lung cancer are detected by the PCR method in the blood. In their study, more than a thousand patients at risk of lung cancer were tested. They reported that with this method, which is a kind of liquid biopsy, it is possible to diagnose lung cancer in the early period through tumor DNA detected in the blood of patients.

“PROMISES HOPE”

prof. Dr. Emphasizing that the number of smokers worldwide is around 1.3 billion, Coşkun said:

“Unfortunately, these rates are very high in our country as well, with an average of 30 percent of people consuming cigarettes in our country. Our first goal as a country is to prevent cigarette consumption. However, early diagnosis of lung cancer is a condition that will enable many patients to fully recover. The method developed by the above researchers is promising. As a result of more extensive research and development of this or similar tests, early diagnosis of lung cancer may be possible in the near future, especially in many individuals at risk, whose smoking we cannot prevent, with practical methods like this.
