Professional (24) writes to women unseemly, Riot bans him for 12 months – the career end threatens

Riot Games has suspended the highly decorated South Korean professional player Kim “Clid” Tae-min for 12 months from League of Legends. His team, Hanwha Life Esports, had already sorted out the former world-class jungler. In June 2023, allegations were made by two women that the LoL professional had molested them. One of the women said she was a minor at the time of the harassment.

Who is this?

  • Clid is one of the most famous and successful junglers in LoL in the last 5 years. But his career has been going downhill since 2021.
  • In 2019 he had great success alongside Faker, he was able to advance to the semifinals of MSI and Worlds with T1. In 2020 he was again in the semifinals of the Worlds with Gen G. In the years that followed, he didn’t quite compete for the international titles at FunPlus Phoenix and Hanwha Life Esports, but he was close.

What did the player do? In June 2023, allegations surfaced from a Twitter user named “Seoyeon” who was able to prove that Clid had sent her several lewd messages and also an explicit photo via the KakaoTalk app.

He is said to have sent things like:

  • “I’m Hard Now”
  • “Say something before I pinch your chest”
  • “I should fuck myself? No, I’ll fuck you.”
  • In addition, a second woman complained that they too had received similar messages from Clid via Facebook. At the time she was still a minor and Clid knew that too.

Riot Games bans Jungler Clid for 12 months – role model function violated

This is his punishment: Riot Games has banned Clid from all Riot-related competitions for 12 months (via lolesports.com).

He is also excluded from all competitions in South Korea for 18 months, a commission for fair e-sports has decided. The reason is “continued sexual harassment, unprofessional behavior and criminal offenses”. (via fair.e-sports)

For a 24-year-old player, that could mean the end of his career. Even if he comes back after a year, he would probably have to move to China or pause for 6 more months.

The Korean league LCK says the investigation found there was no evidence that the women accusing Clid in any way encouraged his behavior. On the contrary, it had become clear that they had resisted his unwelcome advances.

Professional players are expected to behave impeccably. Clid did not meet these requirements.

Clid has the opportunity to appeal against this ban. A commission also recommends that he attend training courses to prevent future crimes and to increase his awareness of sexual assault. This not only has a punitive but also an educational effect.

However, his team put him on the bench months ago and played without their regular jungler. Hanwha Life narrowly missed out on qualifying for Worlds without a clid. They finished fourth in the playoffs and also failed to qualify via the Regional Finals.
