Production is stopped for several weeks

The fire started at 2.25am on Tuesday night, and an Important Public Notice (VMA) has been issued warning of heavy smoke.

The fire is significant, and the facility’s electrolysis plant has burned down, writes Boliden in a press release. On Tuesday morning, however, the fire is limited to the electrolysis plant, according to the company.

An initial assessment is that production can resume within a few weeks, the company writes.

No one is said to have been injured in the fire. Two people have received oxygen treatment, but none of them have had to seek medical attention.

Rönnskärsverken in Skelleftehamn is Sweden’s only smelter for the production of base metals, and works with the recycling of electronic scrap. The industry receives raw materials from mines and electronic scrap to produce copper, gold, silver, zinc and lead.
