“U.S. medical experts are to analyze the presumed remains that have been collected out of an abundance of caution,” the Coast Guard said in a statement after the wreckage was unloaded in Canada.
Wreckage from the mini-submarine Titan previously found on the ocean floor at Titanic, has now been brought to Saint John’s on the Canadian island of Newfoundland.
Salvaging the wreckage is part of advancing the investigation into why the submarine imploded last week, killing all five on board.
The sequence of events surrounding the accident
It was on June 18 that the approximately 6.5 meter long tourist submarine Titan dived towards the wreck of the sunken ocean liner Titanic at a depth of 3,800 meters in the Atlantic Ocean, off Newfoundland.
After one hour and 45 minutes, the crew aboard the companion boat that participated from the sea surface lost contact with the Titan. An intensive search effort took place.
On Thursday, June 22, the US Coast Guard announced that the wreckage of the missing mini-submarine Titan had been found on the seabed, less than 500 meters from the Titanic.
All five on board are deemed to have perished in a “catastrophic implosion”, according to the coast guard.
