Pro single-handedly loses a match he’s already won through careless mistake – could cost his team millions of dollars

The “Bali Major” tournament is currently running in MOBA DOTA 2 (Steam): Once again, everything revolves around the Russian player “Pure” (19) and a careless mistake. He was disqualified and his team lost via decision. The community is excitedly discussing whether all of this is correct.

How did the player lose the match?

  • On July 5th, there was a match between BetBoom and the 2022 Tundra Esports World Champions in the Quarterfinals of the Bali Major.
  • Team Tundra requested a break to report an issue.
  • During the break, BetBoom’s offlaner, 19-year-old Pure, tabbed out of DOTA 2 and switched to a twitch stream from streamer Nix (via twitter). But that is forbidden – even if it had no influence on the ongoing match.

What consequences did that have?? The Pure team actually won the match 2-0. But due to Pure’s mistake, which was discovered afterwards, they were stripped of that win and the game was deemed lost. Also, Pure was disqualified for the rest of the tournament.

    This is the disqualification:

The defeat and disqualification had serious consequences:

  • The team, which was actually already qualified, now had to go to the “Lower Bracket”, where you played with a substitute against the “Azure Ray” team and were knocked out of the tournament
  • In addition, you are no longer guaranteed to qualify for the huge tournament “The International 2023” where every team wants to go. Because the prize money is huge. In 2022, each player won $8.5 million in prize money. With the victory against Tundra-Express the qualification would have been safe.
  • Tundra Express, on the other hand, progressed despite the defeat and is now even in the final of the Upper Bracket
  • Here you can see Pure abbbt for a few seconds – he was “ratted on” for this mistake:

Professional player makes a silly mistake during a break for the second time

    What’s ironic about the case?

“Pure” is the professional who has had bad luck before.

In May 2022, Pure was apparently bored during a game break and thoughtlessly did something very stupid. Lost in thought, he drew a `”Z” on the map: This was a symbol for supporting the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

So he was disqualified 14 months ago and fired from his last team because he couldn’t just sit rigidly in front of the PC during a break.

“It’s not a gray area – he cheated”

How’s the discussion? BetBoom players reacted quite aggressively. One of the players wrote in the chat to the next opponents, Auzre Ray: “Why did you guys force the admins to disqualify Pure? Were you scared to play against our full team?”

The professional player Quinn Calahan saw no other option here. He wrote: “If you are streaming, whether malicious or not, you are cheating. This is not a gray area. It’s not complicated. He cheated and the punishment was appropriate.”

However, a thread has been created on reddit blaming Valve for simply not being able to open the internet browser during a major tournament. Then there would be no such problems.

This “don’t look at the stream or it’s your turn” rule applies to many games. The rule is intended to prevent players from receiving information that gives them an advantage.

At the Fortnite World Cup 2019 it was particularly bitter because there were monitors all over the hall. You should definitely not look at these:
