Pro-Russian populist gets to rule Slovakia

The Hlas-SD party, which is a breakaway party from Smer, is also part of the government.

— We must become a constructive government. You will see an independent Slovak foreign policy, Fico said at the ceremony when he was sworn in as the new prime minister.

Fico is known as a pro-Russian politician who has been compared to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. During the election campaign he promised to drastically cut support for Kiev, the day after the election he said that his country has “bigger problems” than Ukraine.

The Smer party is considered to have been transformed into a populist party with social democratic elements under Fico’s leadership.

Slovakia went to the polls on September 30. Smer received over 23 percent of the votes.
