Give school leaders the legal opportunity to report reduced school budgets that risk having serious consequences for students. That way, principals can pull on the emergency brake when savings requirements go against the requirements of the Education Act, claims Sweden’s School Leaders.

In a debate article in Göteborgs-Posten, the association’s two chairmen, Matz Nilsson and Ann-Charlotte Gavelin Rydman, give an example: Principal Malin Rimmö in Ragunda municipality, who has refused to implement decisions about cuts in the school budget, and received a reprimand from the employer for this. Nevertheless, principals have an obligation under the Education Act to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to develop as far as possible.

Therefore, a Lex Edico should be introduced, which would entail a reporting obligation for school leaders in the event of serious misconduct – such as students risking not meeting the goals. “With Lex Edico, we hope to be able to avoid that school leaders who take their mission seriously face labor law consequences – in the worst case, dismissal”, write the two chairmen.
