Princess Madeleine on the move to Sweden

First interview after moving home • Opens up about the family • The work with the foundation

Princess Madeleine and husband Christopher O’Neill moved with their three children to Stockholm earlier in the year. For Anders Philblad, she now talks about the joy of being back in Sweden.

– I thought it would be a bigger change. Above all for the children. It has gone surprisingly well.

The tribute: “Then you become proud”

25 years ago, when the princess was 17 years old, Queen Silvia started the Childhood Foundation. Now the princess is increasing her commitment to the foundation, which works to protect children from sexual abuse.

– Many people say that mother has been so important in this matter and focused on such a difficult group. There are so few who want to talk about children who are sexually exploited. But mother dared to do it. It has changed the lives of so many. So then you become proud, says the princess.

Since the foundation’s inception, 2,000 projects have been started in 21 different countries. The Queen talks about the foundation’s Barnahus, a place where children who are suspected of being exposed to violence and abuse can meet and talk to everyone they need, under one roof.

– You have the opportunity to give the children peace and quiet, to speak, you can ask questions. They have time to answer, perhaps with the help of a psychologist so that an adult understands what the children really mean.

– I may add that you were on a state visit to Iceland when you saw this model. You decided this is a great way. You took this model to Sweden, adds Princess Madeleine.

Quoting Queen Silvia

When the princess is asked where she wants Childhood to be in 25 years, she looks to her mother.

– Shall I anchor how you started with Childhood? Your quote was that one day I wish…

– Then I would like to shut down Childhood. Then we don’t need it anymore. Then we know that the children are doing well. There is no longer that violence, the queen adds.
