Prime Minister Viktor Orban says he supports Finlands NATO membership

The leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group says that he has asked the speaker of the parliament to send a delegation to Finland and Sweden to investigate the matter.

The Hungarian parliament is scheduled to discuss Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership next week.

Prime minister Viktor Orbán has said that he supports the ratification of the countries’ memberships, but the ranks of his party Fidesz are cracking, says newspaper Telex (you switch to another service).

Leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group Maté Kocsis said at a press conference today, Thursday, that there has been a serious discussion in the group about ratifications. Some of the Fidesz MPs believe that accepting Finland and Sweden into NATO could mean an expansion of the war in Ukraine.

In addition, several Fidesz MPs expressed their aggravation that Finnish and Swedish politicians have insulted Hungary in a harsh and rude way – and now they are asking Hungary for a favor.

The newspaper does not specify what insults the MPs mean, but they are related to the European Union’s criticism of Hungary and demands to follow the rule of law.

Fidesz group leader Kocsis says he has asked the speaker of the parliament to send a delegation to Finland and Sweden to investigate the concerns of MPs.

Kocsis did not say at the press conference how many Fidesz MPs hesitated or opposed the ratification of Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership.

– We don’t have statistics. We had a discussion, Kocsis said.

According to the newspaper Telex, the hesitation of Fidesz MPs does not necessarily mean a delay in the parliamentary proceedings. Kocsis also considers it unlikely that the vote would be postponed.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has asked the members of the group to ratify the countries’ NATO membership.
