Independence cause
This decision also stems from the radicalization of the debate in recent years. But this departure, explains the Scottish Prime Minister, has nothing to do with the last rather complicated months for her. Criticized by her party’s MPs in London, she failed to make significant progress the independence cause in Scotland in eight years in power.
His popularity rating has been falling since December in part because of his positions deemed too liberal on the rights of transgender people. Nevertheless, this resignation surprised everyone, in London and Edinburgh, who expected a withdrawal of the leader of the SNP at the next elections, in 2025.
Nicola Sturgeon will remain in office until the election of the new party leader. For the moment, no natural successor appears.
