Pressed on BankID – telecom companies worried: “Dark numbers”

Pressed on BankID telecom companies worried Dark numbers

A type of fraud has been noticed by various Swedish telecom companies.

Last year, mobile operators were able to testify that several people, especially young people, were pressured by criminal gangs to sign mobile subscriptions on their BankIDs. Since the BankID is then legitimate, the subscription and the mobile phone are also linked to a person.

Tele2 is one of the companies that has taken a case of this kind to court, something like News24 previously written about.

– In 2023, there were approximately 500 cases that were investigated by Tele2 and the police, said Jonas Lindströmgroup security manager at the telecom company, then for Nyheter24.

“The number of darkness is large”

Nyheter24 has also spoken with Telenor about the work to prevent this type of fraud.

– In some cases, agreements are entered into with pressure from someone else and then it can be difficult for the store staff to note that everything is not correct, says Boel Bengtssonpress officer at Telenor, to Nyheter24.

– We believe that the number of people in the dark is large and that many of the vulnerable do not come forward and dispute at all, Bengtsson tells Nyheter24.

However, the telecom company has developed procedures in case the staff suspect that someone is being forced by someone else to start a mobile subscription.

– Should our employees suspect that everything is not right, there are routines set up for how they can prevent/reject the requested agreement, says Bengtsson, and adds:

– We don’t want to go into too much detail about what our routines and processes look like because we don’t want to help the criminals.

The cases that have gone to the district court have usually ended with a settlement where the person who is written on the subscription must pay a smaller part of their debt to the telecom company.

– It happens that customers get in touch and dispute purchases that have been made, and we then investigate each case separately and in individual cases these go on to legal review.

Telenor urges those who become victims of this type of fraud to contact the police immediately.

– We want to urge everyone who has been exposed to this type of crime to contact the police and report it to the police, says Bengtsson to Nyheter24.
