Alexander Stubb said at a peace conference in Switzerland that if peace is not talked about, it will never be achieved.
China is now key to bringing peace to Ukraine, President Alexander Stubb said on Saturday.
– I strongly appeal to China to influence Putin and end this war and withdraw, Stubb said.
On Saturday afternoon, he arrived at the Ukrainian peace meeting in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, and commented on the situation to Finnish journalists.
Along with China, Stubb emphasized the importance of the global south in achieving peace. According to him, the countries of the south will be brought in to support Ukraine when they are reminded of their own colonial past.
– I hope this is the last colonialist war. Russia is an imperialist state whose existence is always based on oppressing another state, another identity by seizing land, Stubb said.
According to Stubb, the Swiss summit has a strong representation from different parts of the world, not just Europe or North America.
– There is also a strong representation from Latin America, Africa, Asia and especially the Middle East. This gives hope that we can start on the path of peace, and I think it is important that it happens on Ukraine’s terms.
From Ukraine’s point of view, the conditions for the realization of peace are the preservation of Ukrainian territories in Ukraine, the security guarantees of the international community, the justice of the war, i.e. bringing the guilty to war crimes courts and reconstruction after peace.
– You shouldn’t wait for a solution here, but you can take steps, Stubb said.
The Swiss meeting has been prepared for a long time at official and diplomatic level. Even after the leaders left for their home countries on Sunday, their security advisers will continue negotiations.
Stubb reminded that it is a preliminary meeting
Stubb also appealed to the President of Russia to Vladimir Putin to end the war.
– If peace is not talked about, it will never be achieved, he said.
Stubb rejected Russia’s so-called “peace initiative” and reminded that the initiator of a war of aggression and a violator of international law does not have the authority to state by what means peace is to be built.
In a presentation unanimously rejected by Western countries, Putin stated on Friday that the war can end if Ukraine abandons its goal of joining the military alliance NATO and hands over four territories to Russia, which it does not even fully control at the moment.
On Saturday, among others, the Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni annoyed Putin by stating that he does not consider an offer in which Ukrainians should withdraw from Ukraine to be a very good proposal for the beginning of negotiations.
Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov stated the state news agency A cup according to which the West responded to the proposal with “a huge number of unconstructive reactions”.
