The Syrian administration declared that they recognized the independence of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic in eastern Ukraine. Based on a source from Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the news stated that “cooperation with the pro-Russian separatists will be strengthened and diplomatic relations will be established”.
‘SYRIA’S MOVEMENT IS VALUABLE’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that there will no longer be diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Syria, and that the pressure for sanctions on Syria will be “further increased”. Zelenskiy also described Syria’s move as “worthless”.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also declared on February 21 that he recognized the separatist regions in Ukraine.
Kremlin Spokesperson Dimitry Peskov said on June 16 that Moscow would “welcome” Syria’s recognition of Donetsk and Lugansk in Ukraine’s Donbass region.
