“Here you can concretely understand what climate change means,” Niinistö spoke.
The president of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and mrs Jenni Haukio visited the Langjökull glacier together with the Icelandic presidential couple on Thursday in connection with the state visit to Iceland.
Langjökull is the second largest glacier in Iceland, the highest point of which is about 1,450 meters above sea level.
It is estimated that the glacier may disappear completely in the next 150 years if climate change continues at the current rate.
Niinistö and Haukio visited the glacier and the cave inside the glacier
The presidential couple also visited the mark where the limit of the glacier was still in 2020.
– This is incredible, but not only a good experience. We can see how the glacier has retreated by at least 100 meters in two years. So it melts. It is a sign of climate change, Niinistö spoke.
– Here you can concretely understand what climate change means.
President of Iceland Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson said that glaciers have always expanded and shrunk, but because of human activity, glaciers are melting “bigger and faster.”
According to Jóhannesson, it is sad if people think that nothing can be done about climate change.
– We can influence. Just as we have had a negative impact on our planet, we can also have a positive impact, Jóhannesson spoke.
Jóhannesson said that he hopes that when people can see the effects of climate change with their own eyes, people will act for the climate.
– We know what needs to be done.
