US President Joe Biden commented late on Wednesday evening for the first time on the results of the mid-term elections, where the Democrats in several places have made a better result than expected.
– It was a good day for democracy and it was a good day for the United States, Joe Biden said at a press conference in the White House.
There was talk of the red wave before the election, but the Republicans’ successes were not as great as many expected, instead the Democrats achieved unexpected successes in several areas. But it has not yet been decided who will get a majority in the Senate – and the Republicans may yet get a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
– The red wave did not occur, says Biden about the success of the Democrats, and he thanked all the young people who voted and said that there are historically many young Americans who seem to have voted again.
Biden: “A family decision”
To a question at the press conference about how the election results affect his thoughts on running for a new term as president, Biden replied that the results have no direct impact on how he reasons. Biden states that he is still considering running for president in 2024.
He will probably decide early next year whether he will run for office or not.
– It is a decision that the whole family must make. I think everyone wants me to run, but we have to discuss it first. I feel no rush to make that decision, says Biden.
Former US President Donald Trump has announced that he will make an important announcement next week, and he is then expected to announce that he will run in the 2024 election.
Biden promises that when he returns from the G20 meeting in Indonesia next week, he will invite representatives from both Democrats and Republicans to discuss how to work together to tackle critical policy issues.
– Regardless of what the final election result is, I am prepared to work together with the Republicans.
