Prepare for snow chaos in the west – SMHI issues nine warnings

The extensive snowfall area moves in from the west overnight on Wednesday.

From midnight, an orange warning applies for wind in combination with heavy snowfall in Bohuslän and Dalsland.

Until lunch there may be 10-20 centimeters of snow, locally up to 25 centimeters and also storm showers on the coast.

– It can be really difficult in traffic, says TV4’s meteorologist Peter Kondrup.

Preparing for snow chaos

From this morning, the warning is extended to also apply to northern Halland and southwestern Västergötland.

During the day, the emergency services and county administrations had meetings with the defense and the Swedish Transport Administration and discussed how to deal with the snow chaos.

– We need to jointly be as prepared as we can. We hope that it will be a little calmer than it was in Skåne a few weeks ago, says Johan Hellsing, regional operations leader at the rescue service in the Western rescue region.

Inserts track carts

Accessibility will be the biggest challenge for the rescue service, which fears large drifts of snow as a result of the strong wind.

During the evening, the Swedish Transport Administration is deploying tracked wagons and the military region has also made several of its tracked wagons ready to move out on Wednesday if necessary.

– If there were to be large amounts of snow, it may be necessary to rescue people, says Johan Hellsing.

Troublesome even to the east

During the day, the snow storm moves to the northeast and from the morning a yellow warning applies in eastern Svealand, where five to ten centimeters of snow and strong winds are expected.

In the afternoon, the snowy weather will reach central Norrland and there an orange warning applies in northeastern Ångermanland and southern Västerbotten’s coastal region.

The snowy weather means that the cold shock that has moved in over the country is temporarily dampened – but the lower temperatures will soon be back.

– As early as Thursday, the cold air will move south again and the cold looks like it will culminate on Friday and Saturday, says Peter Kondrup.

“Bring a thermos”

Johan Hellsing urges the public to stay at home on Wednesday.

– And if you absolutely have to go out, remember to bring warm clothes with you and prepare for the fact that you may have to stand somewhere. A thermos with something hot to drink is recommended.
