The project aims to upgrade both underground and aboveground infrastructure in the core, including the sanitary, sewer and watermains, which are reaching the end of their life, said a media release.
The new underground infrastructure will allow for increased capacity and future development downtown. Streetscaping improvements are also part of the project.
Construction is expected to take up to five years to complete Phase One of the project.
Before the city can begin its work, Enbridge Gas, through its contractor Aecon, will begin replacing natural gas infrastructure on Colborne Street, Brant Avenue, Dalhousie Street and Bridge Street on Monday.
The work is scheduled to take about six weeks, weather permitting, and is a critical step in preparing for full construction in the spring, said a public notice from the city.
