Premier League football on Christmas Eve for the first time in 28 years – when Wolverhampton won against Chelsea

It is only the second time in history that Premier League football has been played on 24 December. The last time was in 1995 when Leeds beat Manchester United 3-1.

The decision to play on Christmas Eve itself has stirred feelings among the supporters’ union in England, who called the match “an unwanted present that no one asked for”.

But Wolverhampton’s fans are probably quite happy with hindsight.

Mario Lemina headed in 1-0 from a corner early in the second half and Matt Doherty made it 2-0 in stoppage time in front of 31,750 at Molineux Stadium.

Frenchman Christopher Nkunku sparked Chelsea’s hopes by netting in the 96th minute on his PL debut, but it was another defeat at Molineux for the London club, who have won just one of their six visits to Wolverhampton since the club’s promotion to the top flight again in 2018.
