Pregnant women with extreme nausea may be receiving the wrong treatment

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Feeling sick and vomiting at the beginning of a pregnancy is not unusual. But the approximately 4,000 who each year suffer from the most serious form of pregnancy sickness – hyperemesis – do not get enough food and drink and must be treated in hospital.

But – it is unclear if the methods used in the hospitals even work.

This shows an evaluation that a group of researchers has done on behalf of SBU – the state’s preparation for medical and social evaluation.

The most common treatment is for the pregnant woman to receive intravenous fluids, but what effect this actually has on the nausea itself for the pregnant woman is quite unclear, says researcher Marie-Therese Vinnars, who is a specialist doctor at Umeå University.

– It is thought that the treatment works on other patient groups who are not pregnant, but who also have severe nausea and vomiting.
