Pure foreign shame: Dream Scenario delivers a grotesque sex scene
Dream Scenario scores one on Rotten Tomatoes Average of 91 percent in criticism. The consensus is that Dream Scenario is a career highlight for Nicolas Cage and leaves one pondering the fickle whims of pop culture. The film receives a rating on our sister site FILMSTARTS Rating of 4 out of 5 stars. Björn Becher’s review states:
How Cage plays the character as he thrives on fame for a short time only to fall even harder is the heart of the film – with one really grotesque sex scene as a turning point. This is followed by a few scenes in which Cage – certainly to the delight of many fans – gives the monkey some real sugar.
Director Kristoffer Borgli also spoke to Collider about this grotesque sex scene. He didn’t manage to be in the same room during filming because he… burst out laughing again and again be.
Not only was it a shameful scene to write and direct, I also had to leave my editing table several times during the editing process. I couldn’t be in the same room as my computer. It was just so much shame to look at.
The scene would probably give some people nightmares, Becher writes on film starts, but it fits in with that intense trip, which Dream Scenario describes. The horror elements increase in the second half of the film.
The ending would flatten out a bit if it wanted too much Message of the film with the sledgehammer wants to bring into the audience’s heads, but that wouldn’t detract from the great production of the film up to that point.
