Portugal between past greatness and duty to remember

The cover of Yves Léonard's book, “History of the Portuguese Nation”.

In 2024, Portugal will celebrate 50 years of the Carnation Revolution, which overthrew the authoritarian Salazarist regime and ushered the country into a democratic era. It was the end of 48 years of dictatorship. In History of the Portuguese Nation (Tallandier), Yves Léonard tells us an epic over 30 centuries of history, from Castile to the great explorers, from the dictator Salazar to the footballer Ronaldo. It describes a country rich in heroes of the past and moments of glory, which participate in the construction of a national narrative with its dark side.

Yves Léonard is a doctor in history, a member of the Sciences Po History Center and associate researcher at the University of Rouen-Normandy.
