Port Dover fire causes 70G damage

Asst. fire chief cites smoking as the cause

Careless smoking is cited as the cause of a fire at a home in Port Dover Thursday that caused an estimated $70,000 damage.

“Firefighters acted quickly and were able to contain the blaze to a single room before it spread throughout the house,” assistant chief James Robertson of the Norfolk County Fire Department said in a news release.

“The occupants were able to escape the home without injury. Cause of the blaze was determined to be careless smoking.”

The alarm was called in around 1 pm Three county stations responded. By the time they got there, Robertson said, “firefighters discovered a working fire, with smoke coming from the second storey.”

No injuries were reported. Robertson signed off with some parting advice:

“The Norfolk County Fire Department wants to remind residents that careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths in Ontario,” he said. “Please encourage smokers to smoke outside. Install smoke alarms on every storey of your house and outside sleeping areas. Never allow anyone in your home to smoke in bed.”
