Porsche’s new electric car may get a petrol engine

Porsches new electric car may get a petrol engine

In 2024, Porsche launched the second generation of its medium-sized SUV Macan, which in recent years has been one of the brand’s best-selling models.

While the outgoing generation was only offered with petrol and diesel engines, the new Macan is fully electric.

This is a different strategy than the one chosen for the big sibling Cayenne, where the old version was updated to be able to continue to be sold with a petrol engine in parallel with the new electric version.

Big loss for Porsche’s electric cars

However, with 2024 in the rearview mirror, it appears that the decision to go all-electric for the new Macan was somewhat rushed, and something that Porsche is now reassessing, reports Coach.

Porsche lost 7 percent in sales for the year compared to 2023, and this was largely due to sales of the brand’s first electric car, the Taycan, falling by as much as 50 percent.

For that reason, the production of the model has been greatly reduced.

Petrol cars part of Porsche’s future

Now Porsche’s finance director Lutz Mesche confirms that cars with a combustion engine will be a central part of the model range for longer than previously predicted.

Originally, Porsche aimed for electric cars to make up 80 percent of global sales by 2030, but now it says instead that the goal will be “based on demand.”

Mensche also says it is investigating the possibility of equipping pure electric cars with hybrid powertrains or internal combustion engines, Autocar reports.

Autocar also reports that statements from a senior Porsche source suggest that a new version of the Macan with a petrol engine is now being considered, as one of “several product scenarios”.

The source points out that the new electric Porsche Macan has received a positive reception, but that the uncertainty in the market makes it difficult to predict how well the model will sell.

The outgoing petrol-diesel powered Porsche Macan has been a very important product for the brand.

During the 10 years that the model has been manufactured, over 500,000 cars have been sold. The model has also sold only in China, where Porsche’s sales fell by a whopping 30 percent in 2024.
