Foxhole is an unusual MMO that is preparing to leave Early Access. The full release brings new features – and one of them has an unusual history.
What kind of game is this? Foxhole is a war MMO that launched into Early Access on Steam a little over five years ago. The developers have now announced that this phase will end and that the full release on Steam will take place on September 28th.
But what do you do in the game? You take on the role of a soldier who must join one of two huge armies.
It is controlled from the iso perspective, i.e. from above. This basically makes Foxhole look a bit like typical strategy games with a war setting.
Since a major update at the end of 2021, up to 3,000 players can take part in the battles at once. These players move in a persistent world – so it remains even if you log out.
The exciting thing: tactics and resources are important, as is teamwork – you can’t just run like mad across the battlefield. Praising also players on Steam: Currently, Foxhole has a rating of “Very Positive”, with 83% favorable reviews (out of 21,130 as of 08 September 2022).
The varied battles also give players the opportunity to take on different roles. In Foxhole, in addition to the pure soldier’s life, you can also choose the option of working as a “logistician” who brings resources and troops to where they need to go.
And it is precisely this group of players that made headlines earlier this year.
Logisticians felt neglected, went on strike and are now getting a train
In early 2022, around 1,800 foxhole logisticians formed a “union” under the name “Logistics Organization for General Improvement (LOGI)” (via logiunion.com).
The logisticians saw themselves at a disadvantage when it came to the innovations in the game. They made the work of logisticians on the battlefield too stressful, there was a constant need for resources. The players apparently didn’t like that, even called for a “strike” and in some cases caused the “soldiers” in the game to lack resources.
This is what the developers are doing with the Steam release: In the devstream, the developers talked about the upcoming update. Apparently, the trade unionists’ criticism was taken to heart. Because as soon as Foxhole 1.0 finally celebrates its release on Steam, a new train system will also land in the game.
Logisticians should be able to tinker large railway networks with rails, which in turn are used to get resources quickly from A to B. That should help reduce the stress.
The announcement is well received by some players on the Foxhole subreddit (via reddit):
In addition, larger industrial facilities are to be introduced, which in turn can be used to mass-produce resources for combat.
But soldiers don’t go away empty-handed either: in the “Inferno Update” new “fire” weapons, such as flamethrowers, come into play.
