Popular tourist resort bans selfies – could result in expensive fines: “Chaos”

Wanting to document your journey through pictures and video is part of the norm, and in recent years the vast majority of people have probably been guilty of taking a selfie or two in front of some popular attraction.

But this is exactly what Matteo Viacavamayor of the fishing village and holiday paradise of Portofino in northwestern Italy, has had enough, the BBC reports.

Tourists in Portofino risk expensive fines

The many tourists who travel to Portofino every year and who stop at the resort’s most popular spots to take pictures and selfies create what Matteo Viacava describes as “anarchistic chaos”. This is because it causes traffic jams and reduced accessibility for pedestrians.

They therefore introduce a ban on taking pictures and selfies in what they call “no-waiting” zones, and anyone who defies the ban, which came into effect from the Easter weekend, risks a fine of 275 euros, which corresponds to roughly 3,100 kroner.

The ban applies during the day until October, according to BBC.
