When Independence Day director Roland Emmerich brought his sci-fi blockbuster Stargate to cinemas in 1994, no one knew that it would become a huge franchise would arise. Today, the series surrounding the eponymous gateway to the stars includes several films and a total of five series.
Fans of Stargate, which airs on RTL ZWEI on Saturday evening, probably have reason to be happy. According to recent rumors, Amazon is working on a sequel to the sci-fi cult.
Science fiction blockbuster: That’s what Stargate is about
Emmerich’s science fiction blockbuster revolves around an ancient artifact found during excavations in Egypt in 1928. Decades later, the US military relies on the support of Egyptologist Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader), who is the artifact alien gateway to the stars identified. Together with a squad of soldiers and Colonel Jack O’Neil (Kurt Russell), the team embarks on a journey to another world ruled by ancient Egyptian gods.
Amazon is reportedly planning a Stargate sequel
At the end of 2022 there were new rumors about a Stargate sequel from Amazon. The group bought the MGM studio in 2021 and can thereby revive the brand. The plans are not yet very concrete. It is unclear whether a Stargate sequel will follow on from the last huge cliffhanger from Stargate Universe or whether Amazon is planning a complete reboot of the sci-fi series.
