Poor test screenings resulted in incredibly expensive reshoots

Black Adam is one of the biggest disappointments of the year. Most DC fans will blame the quality of the blockbuster starring Dwayne Johnson. But in a way it was all too late by the time it hit theaters. Horrendously expensive additional filming made the costs explode. The audience remained unimpressed.

DC wanted money to protect Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam from disappointed fans

This was revealed in a recent Hollywood Reporter article. As a result, the film performed extremely poorly in the first test screenings. The budget was actually set at 190 million US dollars was then attracted to 260 million for reshoots.

But instead of turning negative audience opinions about the film into positive ones with a story enhanced by additional scenes, the new shooting only made the film more expensive. Even with 190 million, Black Adam would have flopped. But the result wouldn’t have stamped Johnson’s DC career on the ground forever. With the final budget, Black Adam will though serve as an example of what not to do for the next 10 years.

Additional filming is often immensely expensive and time-consuming. Sometimes reshoots actually result in big box office successes (like Back to the Future), more often they’re just a portent of financial disappointment (Justice League).
