A local politician in India was brutally killed on Friday by a gang who attacked him with machetes and other sharp objects. Eight people have been arrested.

The victim, politician K Armstrong, was president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Parity was formed to represent the lower castes and the so-called casteless of the country.

According to the police, six people arrived on motorcycles before attacking him, hacking him in the head and neck and then fleeing, writes the Times of India.

Armstrong was taken to hospital but his life could not be saved.

The killing is condemned by BSP party leader Mayawati – who uses only one name – who writes on X that the guilty must be punished. Several of Armstrong’s supporters took to the streets after the murder to protest the violence.
