Polish authorities suspect that the case of a mother and child who fell from a passenger ship into the Baltic Sea on Thursday was a murder and suicide.
Previously, it was thought that the child fell off the ship and the mother jumped after him, but now the Polish authorities suspect that the mother dropped the child into the sea on purpose.
A 36-year-old woman and a seven-year-old boy were Polish citizens.
The passenger ship Stena Spirit was on its way from Gdynia, Poland to Karlskrona, Sweden.

Mother and child were taken from the sea to the hospital
The falls happened on Thursday when the passenger ship Stena Spirit was on its way from Gdynia in Poland to Karlskrona on the southern coast of Sweden. At that time, the ship was about 70 kilometers south of Öland.
About an hour and a half after the first alarm, the Swedish Maritime and Air Rescue Center reported that both of those who had fallen had been picked up from the sea and taken to the hospital in Karlskrona.
On Friday, however, the mother and child were said to have died.
At that time, the case was investigated as a murder, but according to the Swedish authorities, there was still no suspect.
– We have started a preliminary investigation, but there are no suspects in the case. The purpose of the investigation is to try to clarify what happened, says the prosecutor Stina Brindmark The prosecutor’s office in Karlskrona reported on Friday for Aftonbladet.
