Police warns of new wave of gold fraud

Fraudsters who claim to come from the police, banks or insurance companies contact older people and offer to secure their valuables.
Now the police warn of an increase in gold fraud where criminals make home visits to steal.
“These are people we don’t want inside the home,” says Lotta Mauritzson, crime prevention at the police.

The fraud starts with telephone calls or sms where the perpetrators claim that they are the only ones who can secure the valuables in the home. The fraudsters have different entrances but pretend, among other things, to come from the police, banks or insurance companies.

– We have seen this type of telephone fraud that is combined with a home visit for several years. There have been a bit of waves, but during the beginning of 2025 we see an increase in it, says Lotta Mauritzson in after five.

According to Lotta Mauritzson, the perpetrators have come across gold for millions since the beginning of the year. Those affected are primarily the oldest in society.

“A strong warning signal that someone claims it”

Mauritzson emphasizes that neither the police, banks nor insurance companies go home to people to secure valuables, that responsibility lies with the individual himself.

– Unfortunately, the requirement for yourself makes you secure your valuables. So this is a strong warning signal if someone claims the opposite.

Then you should call 112

She urges the person who becomes suspicious to terminate the call and herself to seek out the number for the authority, the company or the bank to check the information. If the conversation has gone so far that the people are on their way home to one, you should alert.

– Then you should call 112 because then it is an ongoing crime. And this is very strongly linked to our criminal networks in Sweden so these are people we do not want inside the home.
