Police warn of text messages to parents: “Be vigilant”

Police warn of text messages to parents Be vigilant

The number of frauds in Sweden is increasing at breakneck speed. In 2023, 238,371 fraud crimes were reported, which was more than 42,000 more reports compared to the previous year. Common forms of contact attempts from the fraudster are usually via scam text messages, emails or calls.

The fact that fraud is becoming more common has resulted in both companies and authorities issuing sharp warnings to customers and private individuals.

Last in line is the police warning that fraudsters are posing as your child to trick you into paying bills and transferring money.

Now another form of attempted fraud has caught the eyes of the police. In Enköping, several parents have received text messages from someone pretending to be a teacher at their children’s school. The text message says that money is being collected to go on a class trip:

“Hello! I am raising money for a class trip. Do you want to help? Swisha till…”, it says in text messages sent out to several parents.

Now the police coordinator of the fraud section in the Mitt region is speaking out, Linnéa Löfblad, about the new form of attempted fraud. In an interview with Swedens radio she says that the incident, in addition to deceiving people, can also damage the school’s reputation.

– It’s the first time we’ve seen someone claiming to come from a school and be staff there. It is clear that it is serious and can damage the school’s reputation.

She also takes the opportunity to send a warning to the public.

– Unfortunately, there is something happening today that you have to be vigilant and attentive to.
