Police Simulation is the new hit on Steam

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The game “Police Simulator – Patrol Officers” was released on Steam on November 10, 2022 and made it one of the most successful new releases in November. It has a good rating with 88% positive reviews, but some of the reviews raise eyebrows.

What kind of game is this?

  • Police Simulator: Patrol Officers (€30, Steam) sends players to the fictional US city of Brighton. There, players can fulfill their duty as a police officer.
  • This makes it possible for players to chase graffiti sprayers, catch traffic offenders or search suspicious people. Oddly enough, the game seems to have a penchant for letting the cops find “human teeth” during searches.
  • As reported by Steam, the police simulator was one of the most successful new releases in November 2022, alongside games like Sonic: Frontiers, Zero Sievert or Crysis 2 Remastered (via Steam).
  • Testers use game as a means of criticizing the police

What do you notice about the reviews?? The game has a positive rating of 88% in reviews. But some of the user tests seem to paint a relatively cynical picture of everyday police life. This applies not only to the USA, but also to German-language reviews:

  • A user in English writes: “Shooted a civilian and got a day suspension, just like in real life” – apparently a reference to the fact that in the USA police officers often enjoy a bonus in court.
  • A user in German writes: “I pepper sprayed the first civilians I met because of their highly conspicuous gait and then arrested them.”
  • Twitch streamer shakes off police in GTA 5 by braking really smart

  • A review in English: “Started my first shift. Saw a curb swallow, stopped it. She seemed nervous and asked for her ID. Decided to search them. she ran away I shot them with my stun gun. Found a knife and human teeth so I arrested them. Called for backup and they threw her in the police van. Clean up the streets, one by one.”
  • In English: “Shooted someone for dirtying the street, got fired. 10 out of 10.”
  • Again in English: “Don’t make me run over people or commit police brutality. Not a bit realistic 1/10.”
  • When you look at the reviews, you can breathe deeply that some people only play a virtual police officer and have not become one in real life.

The reviews are otherwise unanimous: The game has some interesting approaches, but there is still a lack of content and the tasks are repeated quickly after a while.

A real policeman writes in his review: You can tell from the game that the developers have their hearts in the right place, but there is a lack of expertise in the details. You should urgently ask someone what the everyday life of a real police officer is like, who really knows that and doesn’t just make sense of it.

Speaking of new simulation. In Dwarf Fortress you don’t simulate the everyday life of a police officer, but that of a dwarf in a fantasy world. At least no one can complain that there is a lack of expertise and that you have to ask a real dwarf how it works with the digging, digging and digging:

Complex simulation goes steeply on Steam after 20 years, makes developers millionaires in 1 week
