A policeman managed to stop two fleeing burglars by bursting a tire on the car they were traveling in. Now he is convicted of misconduct and must pay a fine of SEK 20,000, writes Ystads Allehanda.

Last fall, the police happened to pass a car company in Sjöbo in their spare time during a burglary in progress. He called for backup and was nearly hit as the fleeing burglars took off.

He has defended the fact that he shot at the tires by saying that he was in an emergency situation. But Ystad’s district court considers that the risk that he would not succeed in stopping the car was imminent and that instead there was a high risk that someone inside the car would be seriously injured.

The policeman is sentenced to 80 days’ fine for an official misconduct that is not considered minor. The police authority’s personnel responsibility board has already decided that he can keep his job.
