Police plan to monitor student Beach Day activities in Norfolk

Norfolk OPP will be hitting the beach Friday, along with what’s expected to be hundreds – if not thousands – of students who celebrate ‘Beach Day’ on the first Friday of June.

A hot, sunny day can draw hoards of students from their schools to the beaches of Long Point, Turkey Point and Port Dover, although Friday’s weather prediction calls for cooler temperatures and possible rain.

But police will be patrolling the beaches, regardless, looking particularly for those who might put themselves or others in danger.

Const. Andrew Gamble of the OPP said all driving, liquor, cannabis, trespass and criminal offenses will be enforced.

“Officers will be on the lookout for underage drinking, drinking and driving, trespassing, property damage and any other actions that endanger people or property,” Gamble said in a news release.

He noted that the loosely organized event isn’t supported by authorities and some students leave school without permission from parents.

Beach Day isn’t sanctioned by the area school boards and students are marked absent unless excused by a parent or guardian.
