Police investigating after person hitches ride on back of truck

A video showing a person standing on the rear of a truck as it traveled down Highway 24 has prompted a police investigation.

The person, who has what appears to be a computer bag over one shoulder, is standing on the rear impact guard of the large truck and is hanging on to the rear frame.

“No, YOU are NOT seeing things! A person made a decision to ride on the back on this truck on #Hwy24 unknownst to the driver. This is a very dangerous act that could of had life-altering or ending consequences,” OPP Acting Sgt Ed Sanchuk said in a social media post.

Sanchuk said the video was sent to police by a concerned citizen.

The video was shot live at night on Highway 24 in the Waterford area. The truck appears to be heading north towards Brantford. It appears to have occurred on May 5 at about 10:30 pm

The video was taken by a man in the vehicle traveling behind the truck. The Reformer has attempted to contact the person.

“What is going on?” said the man, who from the commentary appears to be the person driving the second vehicle. “I can’t even figure this out.”

“Like, what is this guy doing?” the driver asks, saying he’s curious as to why the person is on the truck.

“It’s not like we’re just in town or something. We’re doing 80k.”

The man says it’s cold out and that the person is holding on tight to the truck.

The driver says he is running low on gas, and even misses his first turn off as he follows the truck. He also yells out to the man on the truck.

“That guy’s going to fall and die or get to his destination,” said the driver.

“He is like in the grabbing the train days but he’s grabbing a truck that’s on a highway towards Brantford and it’s really cold out . . . he really has no choice to hang on either because they are going over 80k.”

An investigation into the incident is now underway.
