Police forced to replace convicted perpetrator after Easter riots

After the Easter riots in Örebro 2022, a 45-year-old man was sentenced in the Supreme Court to 2 years and 7 months in prison for gross sabotage against blue light operations. Despite the fact that the man was convicted, the police are obliged to cover his court costs of SEK 12,650.

– It is completely bizarre that the person who wanted to kill us should get our money, says one of the police officers who was injured to the newspaper.

Withdrawn claim for damages

The reason is that the Örebro district court chose to separate the question of damages from the criminal case. The Supreme Court later clarified that police officers cannot receive damages for infringement in the case of gross sabotage against blue-light operations – it is considered a crime against the state, not against individual police officers.

The police then withdrew their claim for damages, which meant that they lost the case for damages and had to pay the perpetrator’s legal costs.

“Don’t intend to pay a penny”

One of the policemen who was subjected to stone throwing, and suffered a severe concussion during the riot, tells DN that he refuses to pay.

– I don’t intend to pay a penny. Then they better foreclose on me. This is so wrong, I was in Sveaparken as a service measure, it was not optional to work, he says.
