A St. Thomas police dog is recovering at home after getting hit by a car while chasing a suspect on a bicycle, St. Thomas police say.
Officers spotted a 29-year-old man who was wanted on several warrants about 1 pm on Wednesday, police reported Friday.
The man fled on a bicycle and the police dog, Axle, went after him. A passing vehicle struck Axle, police say.
The suspect eventually dropped the bicycle and started to run, but officers caught up and arrested him.
He is facing new charges of theft and escaping custody, police say.
Axle was taken to an animal hospital where an examination showed no signs of broken bones, police say.
