Officers with the Norfolk detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police charged several people with impaired driving over the weekend, starting Friday afternoon until Sunday evening.
“It’s not rocket science. If you drink, don’t drive,” West Region OPP Acting Sgt Ed Sanchuk said in a social media post on Tuesday. Sanchuk specifically cited one person who was charged by the OPP Marine Unit while in a boat on Lake Erie.
Police stopped a vessel on Lake Erie between Turkey Point and Pottahawk Point at just after 8 pm on Sunday.
A 54-year-old Norfolk County man was subsequently charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
Other impaired driving incidents on the weekend include:
- Sunday, July 10 – 58-year-old Norfolk man charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) after single-vehicle crash on Queen Street South in Simcoe.
- Sunday, July 10 – Ordance Avenue, Turkey Point – 24-year-old Ohsweken man charged with operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), and novice driver- blood alcohol concentration above zero.
- Sunday, July 10 – Turkey Point Road – 28-year-old Hamilton man charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
- Sunday, July 10 – Turkey Point Road – 61-year-old Hamilton woman charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
- Sunday, July 10 – St. Johns Road East – 22-year-old Hamilton man charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
- Friday, July 8 – Evergreen Hill Road, Simcoe – 71-year-old Norfolk man charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
- Friday, July 8 – Main Street, Port Dover – 56-year-old Norfolk man charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
- Friday, July 8 – 1st Concession Road, South Walsingham – 25-year-old Oxford County man, charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and being intoxicated in the public place. The man is also facing other charges.
Brant OPP also charged a driver after stopping a vehicle on Friday afternoon on Highway 24 South in Brant County. The driver was taken to the Norfolk OPP detachment for testing. A 64-year-old Norfolk County man was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) and driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available. He was also charged with operating an unsafe vehicle and using a defaced license plate.
This is the second time in less than a month that police have commented on the high number of impaired driving charges in Norfolk County.
